See Over 190 Species of Birds at the Sanctuary
Ranging from common to rare, there are about 190 different species of birds located in the various ecosystems of the sanctuary. With 135 acres of striking landscapes, there are plenty of places for our feathered friends to reside and thrive. In addition, the sanctuary is bounded by thousands of acres of additional National Forest and Santa Fe River Watershed land. This entire landscape provides a safe residence for animals, plants, and other nature that you can see up close and personal when you visit. Some of the more popular birds you might come across include the Dark-eyed Junco, Townsend’s Solitaire, Steller’s Jay, and White-breasted Nuthatch. View a list of other birds you might see.
Explore the Randall Davey Audubon Center Hiking Trails
Take a walk on the wild side when you decide to embark on a hiking adventure in the Randall Davey Audubon Center. You will discover some truly beautiful landscapes as you explore the large trail system and soak in the surrounding nature. Leading through several different habitats and plant zones, these trails explore everything from meadows to Ponderosa Pine forests. Explore on your own anytime between 8am and 4pm Monday through Saturday. If you’re looking for a guided tour, visit at 8:30am on Saturday for a free bird walk led by a local expert!
Tour the Historic Randall Davey House and Studio
If you’re looking for some history in addition to your nature walk, visit on Friday. Every Friday at 2pm, there is a docent-led tour of the historic Randall Davey House and Studio. It’s quite unique that Santa Fe’s only nature center has such a rich artistic past. Take a journey back in time as you explore the house and studio, preserved in its original state from the mid-1900s. Original furnishings, mural paintings, and a prohibition-era hidden bar are a few one-of-a-kind features!
