How to Experience the Cross of the Martyrs
What Is the Cross of Martyrs?
The Cross of Martyrs is the scenic overlook with incredible views of Santa Fe. This network of paved switchbacks winds up a hillside from Paseo De Peralta on the Northeast side of town. The walkway up has a collection of plaques showcasing our city’s rich history with the Cross of Martyrs sitting atop the hill.
What Can You Do There?
“Hiking” up to the Cross of Martyrs on an early morning stroll is the best way to enjoy this Santa Fe attraction. It’s only one mile from El Farolito Inn, making it a manageable walk, especially on a cool morning. Make sure you bring your camera because the views here are beautiful. Watching a sunset at the Cross of Martyrs is also an incredible experience. The hilltop location provides a fantastic vantage point for photographing the skyline of the City Different. History buffs will also love the timeline of important events and moments throughout the storied history of one of the oldest city’s in America.
While the hike isn’t long or challenging, the pathway up to the Cross of Martyrs is steep at certain points. You may need to take a couple of extra-long breaks while walking to the top due to Santa Fe’s high elevation. This is still a great place to soak in the stunning scenery.
How Do You Get There?
If you’re staying with us at El Farolito, we recommend walking over to the Cross of Martyrs. It’s an excellent way to get a taste of the town before enjoying the breathtaking views from the top of the hill. Of course, if you don’t want to make the mile-long trek, there is a small parking lot located off Prince Avenue that puts you steps from the Cross.
