The Best Route for Weekend Getaways From Phoenix to Santa Fe
Traveling by car is the best choice for traveling from Phoenix to Santa Fe. There are three primary routes between the two cities, but we recommend taking Highway 87 out of town before connecting with several other highways leading to Albuquerque. From there, it’s a straight shot up to the City Different. All in all, it’s about a 481-mile trek that takes seven and a half hours. Here is the link to the route information! It’s a fantastic alternative to flying, which can be especially expensive out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

3 of Our Favorite Santa Fe Vacation Ideas
1. Revel in Santa Fe’s History and Museums
You must spend at least a day of your getaway from Phoenix, exploring the astonishing array of architecture, attractions, and sights here. The Santa Fe Plaza, Palace of the Governors, and Loretto Chapel are just a few of the must-see attractions. You can easily spend an entire day perusing the many buildings featuring the famous adobe-style architecture that is now a calling card of Santa Fe. We suggest keeping an eye out for a couple of hidden gems around town before walking back to your room at our Inn.
There are also plenty of world-class museums that you need to explore during your visit. The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Museum of International Folk Art, and the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture are excellent spots to take in Southwestern culture, history, and art. For a truly unique experience, make sure you stop by Meow Wolf. This fun and interactive science-fiction mystery revolves around technology and art to create an engaging story for visitors.
2. Indulge in New Mexico Cuisine
In between these exploring these museums, take a break at one of the restaurants near the heart of town. Here, you can sample one of our local favorites—the green chile cheeseburger! Hotspots like Tune-Up Cafe and Casa Chimayo serve up tasty local Santa Fe flavors. If you want to treat yourself to a fine dining experience, book a reservation at La Casa Sena or the Coyote Cafe. Top the night off at one of the live music venues. If you extend your stay into June, make sure you catch an evening performance at the Santa Fe Opera for a sunset view that is second to none.
3. Explore the Great Outdoors
Our area’s incredible collection of outdoor adventures is another reason why Santa Fe is one of the best weekend getaways from Phoenix. Miles of hiking trails await you in the nearby Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Pecos National Park is further afield and is home to a collection of hikes in addition to hidden Civil War gems.
Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument is home to otherworldly landscapes through massive, cone-shaped rock formations. Another must-see place during your four days in Santa Fe is Bandelier National Monument. You’ll find hiking trails and some of the most incredible communities carved into the sides of a canyon by 12th-century Ancestral Pueblo people. Head south of the City Different to view ancient writing and symbols at La Cieneguilla Petroglyphs.
