History of the Wheelwright Museum
The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian has focused on the art created by Native Americans since its founding in 1937. Mary Cabot Wheelwright, originally from Boston, and Hastiin Klah, a Navajo singer and medicine man, came together to preserve these important artifacts.
This was an incredibly important time in history because the United States government was in the process assimilating the Navajo people into society. They were forbidden to speak their language or partake in their customs or culture. It was feared by supporters of the Navajo that their Native American culture and history would be lost. Wheelwright and Klah worked together to preserve and recreate what they could.
Visiting the Wheelwright Museum
When you visit the Wheelwright Museum, you’ll find a variety of exhibitions that document the Navajo’s history and culture. The art displayed here spans all the way back to the 1850s and continues to the present. They have become known for exhibiting little-known genres by granting solo shows. No matter the exhibit, you know that the museum will give you expert research and outstanding displays. Museum Info
Admission into the museum is just $8.00. You can visit for free on the first Sunday of every month, have a valid school ID, are under 12 years of age, are in the military, or are Native American. The museum is open seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Case Trading Post isn’t your typical museum gift shop. As one of the city’s oldest continuously operated Native American art galleries, it has some of the best authentic arts and crafts in all of Santa Fe. Goods consist of contemporary and vintage art such as jewelry, pottery, textiles, woven baskets, paintings, and more.
