New Mexico, specifically Santa Fe, is a melting pot of cultures with a vast history. We recommend heading to the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian to start! Make sure you access our complimentary Vacation Guide for even more information on what to see and do in Santa Fe.
History of the Wheelwright Museum
The Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian has focused on the art created by Native Americans since its founding in 1937. Mary Cabot Wheelwright, originally from Boston, and Hastiin Klah, a Navajo singer and medicine man, came together to preserve these important artifacts.
This was an incredibly important time in history because the United States government was in the process assimilating the Navajo people into society. They were forbidden to speak their language or partake in their customs or culture. It was feared by supporters of the Navajo that their Native American culture and history would be lost. Wheelwright and Klah worked together to preserve and recreate what they could.
Visiting the Wheelwright Museum
When you visit the Wheelwright Museum, you’ll find a variety of exhibitions that document the Navajo’s history and culture. The art displayed here spans all the way back to the 1850s and continues to the present. They have become known for exhibiting little-known genres by granting solo shows. No matter the exhibit, you know that the museum will give you expert research and outstanding displays. Check out their current and upcoming exhibitions to see what will be featured during your stay at El Farolito!
