Below, we’ve highlighted several of our favorite areas to go hiking near Santa Fe.
- One of the most popular hiking trails in Santa Fe is the Atalaya Mountain Trail. You’ll hike six miles out and back, but it’s generally considered an easier hike. The hike starts in a beautiful aspen forest and eventually comes out to a stunning panoramic view at the top. It’s one of the best dog-friendly hikes near Santa Fe, too!
- If you’re looking to hike near Santa Fe but don’t want to travel far to get there, the Dale Ball Trail System is the perfect choice! This network of trails, which is ideal for hiking and mountain biking, is accessible from downtown Santa Fe and affords users the quickest route into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. In total, there are around 25 miles of trails to explore, all of which vary in length and difficulty.
- The area with the biggest bang for your buck hiking-wise is the Santa Fe National Forest, an area filled with incredible opportunities for hiking near Santa Fe. One of the more popular trails here is the Grasshopper Canyon Trail, rated as a moderate 3.1-mile trek through beautiful forests and glens.
- If you’d prefer an easy, flat trail as opposed to challenging mountain hikes, then one of the best places for some urban hiking near Santa Fe (or biking!) is the Santa Fe Rail Trail. This popular trail starts at the Santa Fe Railyard and travels south for 15.5 scenic miles.
- Not too far out of downtown Santa Fe is Hyde Memorial State Park, another excellent choice for hikers. There are five trails ranging from short and easy to a bit longer and through more rugged territory.
- The La Tierra Trail network is another great place for hiking near Santa Fe. Here, you’ll find a loop that connects several different trails. It’s a great place to spot local birds and wildflowers, too.
- If you’re up for getting a little further outside of the Santa Fe area, we recommend a unique destination, Rio En Medio Falls. The hike is surprisingly lush, and you’re rewarded after a short two miles with the waterfall.
- A beautiful place to enjoy some hiking near Santa Fe is the Valles Caldera National Preserve, a diverse landscape that is just as popular for hiking as it is for stargazing.
- Finally, don’t miss your chance to go hiking at Bandelier National Monument. There are more than 70 miles of hiking trails here, including some that lead the way to ancestral pueblo homes and other remarkable historical finds.
