Your Guide to Fly Fishing on the Pecos River
Pecos National Historic Park in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains is the top destination in the area to go fly fishing in the Pecos River. This scenic river offers some of the best fly fishing in the state during the summer months. Every year, the season starts in the first two weeks of June and extends through the beginning of August. The beautiful scenery and fresh mountain air provide a fantastic outdoor experience that’s only about 35 minutes outside of Santa Fe.
You will need to make reservations prior to your arrival if you wish to fly fish in the Pecos River. There are three main beats in the park, and you may share one with others even after you make a reservation. The park does not allow fishing on Tuesday and Thursday.
Tip: Be sure to attain your proper New Mexico fishing license before heading to Pecos National Historic Park. Any bait other than artificial lures is prohibited. Check the park’s website for more restrictions and notices regarding fly fishing.
